The History of Star Wars Galactic BattlegroundsEdit

In 1999, Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings was released for the PC, running on the Genie Engine. The game was a sequel to the earlier Age of Empires, and became immensely popular. In 2000, an expansion for The Age of Kings was released, entitled The Conquerors.

In 2001, Ensemble Studios, the creator of the Age of Empires franchise, teamed up with LucasArts to make Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds, a clone of The Age of Kings that ran on the same engine, the Genie Engine. It featured six civilizations, each with its own architecture. The two games were similar in their economy gameplay, but Galactic Battlegrounds differed from its parent game in that it featured aircraft, mechs, invisible units, and energy shields. In 2002, an expansion for Galactic Battlegrounds was released. Entitled Clone Campaigns, it added two new civilizations that were based on the main factions present in Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones, which was released around the same time. The original game and its expansion were later sold together in a bundle.

The bundle was put on Steam more than 15 years after its initial release. It is also available on GOG for the same price.
