The Animal Nursery is a building that is available in Tech Level 1. It costs 100 Carbon, and gathers food from any herdables (Banthas and Nerfs) that are gathered inside. It is also a requirement to train Mounted Troopers.

Players can choose whether to place herdable animals in an Animal Nursery (which will give a slow, constant trickle of food for as long as they remain garrisoned), or have the Workers slaughter them for food (which is better if the player needs food immediately, but won't do anything in the long run). In most games, placing them in the Nursery is the better option as it grants an infinite supply of food; as long as the player has enough herdables in the Nursery and the building is kept intact, they won't need to spend time and resources building Farms or AquaHarvesters. That could be ideal for diverting other precious resources and Workers to other areas. Players can build multiple Animal Nurseries to house more herdable animals, although one that is full is usually enough for the job, as long as it is upgraded.

In the original game, food production will be slowed if the Animal Nursery is not powered. This was changed in Clone Campaigns; in addition, base food production rate was increased. Researching upgrades (and production of units in the case of the Confederacy) will still slow down, however.

The Republic has access to the best Nurseries, thanks to their Kaminoan Refit technologies. The Confederacy can train three unique units from the Nursery, each being a specialised counter to something.

"These structures must be built before you can train Mounted Troopers at your Troop Centre, In addition. Animal Nurseries can be used to garrison herded banthas and nerfs, which will then produce a steady supply of food for your Civilisation. Various technologies at the Animal Nursery will increase the food production from your herded animals. Be sure to power your Animal Nursery by building a Power Core nearby. Unpowered, the Animal Nursery will operate at only 25 percent of its effectiveness."

Clone Campaigns changes[]

  • Originally, the Animal Nursery had 1,000 hit points. This was lowered to 600 in the expansion.
  • Originally, the Animal Nursery produced food at 25% efficiency if unpowered. In the expansion, it always produces food at full efficiency, but the production of units and researching of technologies is still slowed down if unpowered.
